Terms of Service

The service

Wild Sightings provides a map and community wildlife-observation features. Information is provided for general educational and recreational purposes. Sightings are user-submitted and may be incomplete, inaccurate, delayed, or misidentified.

Accounts

You may browse without an account, but reporting a sighting requires Google sign-in. You are responsible for activity associated with your account and for maintaining the security of your Google account. You must provide accurate information and must not impersonate anyone.

Your submissions

You retain ownership of content you submit. You grant Wild Sightings a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, modify for formatting, display, and distribute that content as needed to operate, improve, and promote the service.

You represent that you have the right to submit the content and that it does not violate another person’s rights or applicable law. Because sighting information may be public, do not submit private personal information or sensitive locations that could endanger wildlife.

Acceptable use

You may not:

Wildlife and personal safety

Do not approach, feed, disturb, capture, or harm wildlife. Respect closures, private property, protected areas, and local regulations. Map markers do not guarantee public access, trail conditions, safety, or the current presence of an animal. You are responsible for your decisions and surroundings while using the service.

Moderation and account action

We may remove content, restrict reporting, suspend accounts, or stop providing some or all of the service when reasonably necessary to protect users, wildlife, the service, or third parties; enforce these Terms; or comply with law.

Third-party services

Wild Sightings uses third-party services such as Google, Supabase, and OpenStreetMap infrastructure. Their services are governed by their own terms and policies, and we are not responsible for services that we do not control.

Changes and availability

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability or that data will always be preserved. We may update these Terms, and continued use after an updated version takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms where allowed by law.

Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Wild Sightings is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant the accuracy of sightings, maps, locations, identifications, or user-submitted content.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Wild Sightings and its operators will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for losses arising from your reliance on sightings, maps, locations, user content, or service availability. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.
